I always found a sense of security and competence in the art classroom all the way into high school. Then in my senior year I was exposed to the amazing world of the biological sciences and from there received my BA in Biology from Wheaton College in Massachusetts and went into research labs. In 1991 while painting the stage set for an elementary school musical in Putney, Vermont I remembered the joy of painting and soon after was in an art studio taking lessons.
In 2001 I became part of a group of 11 called “The Putney Painters” who met several times a month in a local barn to paint with master painters Richard Schmid and Nancy Guzik. Here is where I learned about value and edges, temperature and colors as we worked on “heads”, still life and landscapes. I had the honor of painting with this group for nearly 5 years, a time I consider my classical training. This barn was the location of Village Arts of Putney and hosted workshops by Albert Handell, Clayton Beck, Dennis Sheehan and others.
When my husband and I moved to Santa Fe in 2005 I sought out instructors who used the same painterly vocabulary and I continue to take instruction in this traditional mode today. From 2005 to 2008 I studied plein air painting with Anita Louise West. In 2007 I started and continue to study still life painting with Kevin Gorges with the goal of strengthening my landscape work. Surprisingly, I have found the slower, contemplative and intimate approach required of still life painting wonderfully satisfying. Still nothing beats an outing with friends for a day of paint and New Mexican sunshine.
Last year (2009) I was in a number of shows: several at the Art Center at Fuller Lodge in Los Alamos, Rio Grande Art Association’s annual “Encantada” show, Masterworks New Mexico show (Honorable Mention), the annual Plein Air Painters of New Mexico Paint-out and show in Taos and two shows in Texas. The year ended showing at the Placitas Artists Series in December.
This year (2010) is off to a frantic start: I have been juried into Red River Valley Museum International Juried Show in Vernon, Texas (3rd year), and have 2 works in the Nomadas del Arte in Dallas (2nd year). I will be showing 2 works at Masterworks New Mexico in April (2nd year) and of course I will be showing work at my studio during the Eldorado Studio Tour May 15 & 16 (5th year). A group of local artists will also be showing at Art Mix in Eldorado on April 3-17.
