A Little History
A Quick History to the Present -
I always found a sense of security and competence in the art classroom all the way into high school. Then in my senior year I was exposed to the amazing world of the biological sciences and from there received my BA in Biology from Wheaton College in Massachusetts and went into research labs. In 1991 while painting the stage set for an elementary school musical in Putney, Vermont I remembered the joy of painting and soon after was in an art studio taking lessons.
In 2001 I became part of a group of 11 called “The Putney Painters” who met twice a month in a local barn to paint with master painters Richard Schmid and Nancy Guzik. Here is where I learned about value and edges, temperature and colors as we worked on “heads”, still life and landscapes. I had the honor of painting with this group for nearly 5 years, a time I consider my classical training. This barn was and still is the location of Village Arts of Putney, the group known as The Putney Painters.
When my husband and I moved to Santa Fe in 2005 I sought out instructors who used the same painterly vocabulary. From 2005 to 2008 I studied plein air painting with Anita Louise West. In 2007 I studied still life painting with Kevin Gorges to strengthening my landscape work. Surprisingly, I have found the slower, contemplative and intimate approach required of still life painting wonderfully satisfying. Still nothing beats an outing with friends for a day of painting. Occasionally I will take a workshop from my friend Bill Gallen.
I have shown at Rio Grande Art Association, Masterworks New Mexico, Plein Air Painters of New Mexico, the Art Center at Fuller Lodge in Los Alamos, Red River Valley Museum International Juried Show in Vernon, Texas, and Nomadas del Arte in Dallas. I participated 8 times in the Eldorado, NM Studio Tour. I have been represented by the Eilene Siegal Gallery in Santa Fe and The Silver Hat Gallery in Tubac, AZ.
In 2010 I was featured in American Art Collector Magazine in the Santa Fe section which mentioned 11 notable places for fine art. I was one of the 2 artists while all the others mentioned were galleries.
The move to Green Valley in 2013 has offered me a new landscape and wonderful new teachers and fellow artists. I am currently painting with landscape painter Beth Ray and studying portraiture with Lois Griffel.
Be well. Paint with joy,
Molly
